When I first layed eyes on this wonderful character doll,
Volland ca.1931 Shown here with other Volland Characters Uncle Clem,Eddie Elf,Percy Policeman & Raggedy Ann I knew I HAD to recreate him. I searched for just the right shades of felt for his clothes and was even able to find almost identical little brass "studs" like those used on the "original" dolls. I chose not to make the seam down the front of his red & white striped legs... and placed it in the back for a cleaner finish. With very few exceptions, I tried to "duplicate" this adorable little fellow. Rather than the 17 1/2" height, I chose to make him 20"to match my growing collection of character dolls.
And Here he is !!!
Pictured with illustration of "Original"
I now plan to offer all of them in 10", 15" and 20" to meet the needs of my varied customers. Many have such large collections that they prefer smaller dolls that will not take as much room. Others prefer "The -Bigger-The-Better". I too have limited space to display all of my "creations".
The Pirate Chieftan and Eddie Elf are the only Gruelle characters in the entire set never depicted as toys in the Raggedy books.
Not based on a specific character, the Pirate seems to be just one of the crew found in the "Camel with the Wrinkled Knees" (who turn out to be girls posing as men in the story)
Here are a few of My other recreations of "Pirate Chieftan" with friends To Learn more about ALL of the Raggedy Characters..............Click on their Link in the left-hand column.
