~ A "Special" Dolly .....for Iris ! ! ~
In Loving Memory of her sister Lee and their shared love of
(The little dolly.....from the Island of "Misfit" Toys)
Recently a new customer called, from Glen Gardner New Jersey and commissioned me to create a cloth version of the little dolly from the Island of Misfit Toys in the wonderful Christmas video of Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer.
Although I have watched this video numerous times with my daughter and then my grandchildren..........I could not immediately picture the little dolly that she was speaking of.
From our conversation, it soon became clear to me, why this little "dolly" held a very "special" place in her heart.
She and her late sister had shared a love of this movie and especially this very precious little doll as children.
I agreed to research the little dolly, and promised to get a copy of the video from my grandchildren and watch it right away.
She suggested that she could send a "very special" keychain of the little dolly, ( which had been given to her by her dear sister) so that I could get a close-up three dimentional view of this little doll.
My first question became............
What is wrong with the Dolly....
that she is
on the Island of Misfits?
My first thought was that the little dolly could have whispered to Santa..... (after bed-time prayers)"I'm
a little rag doll who just wants a friend. I think that
will help my broken heart mend."
.....and since we all know that Santa never reveals those "secrets" that are whispered to him......
So of course, this remains to be
the ever-burning question for Misfit philosophers of all
time.
Now, in reseaching the little "misfit" Dolly this is what I have found so far:
Rick Goldschmidt in his book "The Enchanted World
of Rankin Bass" writes: In the original broadcast the
Dolly's screen time is mere seconds. I don't believe
Romeo Muller really gave the character much thought.
She
was granted more screen time in the 1965 and 1997
broadcasts which ultimately led many a fan to wonder
what was wrong with her.
Arthur Rankin says that Dolly's
problem is more psychological.
As it is never
mentioned in the script why in particular the doll is a
misfit, some offer this: Charlie-in-the-Box tells
Rudolph, Hermey and Yukon when they arrive on the Island
of Misfit Toys that King Moonracer flies over the earth
each night and brings unloved toys to the Island of
Misfits.
Dolly is perhaps there because she feels she is
unloved (as King Moonracer explains about misfits) and
perhaps the little girl who onced played with her is now
grown up and Dolly now sits in a box, unwanted, waiting
to be loved by another little girl again.
"In certain
circles," this explanation is offered and widely
accepted by Misfit
Philosophers.
Whatever the reason................
I can only speak for myself,
when I tell you, that this little dolly has become very "Special" to me,
because of the love of two sisters
and their "bond" of love
shared for this special little dolly
a love so strong that it would make it impossible
for this dolly to remain locked away on such an island
known as the Island of Misfit Toys!

Hello!
It's going to be a WONDERFUL Christmas this year!
I now have my very own website,
and Gayle has promised that I will be finished in time to spend Christmas with Iris ......
I'm sure we will watch the video together
and probably shed lots of
happy tears as we remember all of those previous Christmas's
that she shared with her "dear" sister, Lee........
but this time,
she will have me to "love"
and share her wonderful memories of "Lee" with..........
and tell me over and over again,
how much the two of them loved me and each other !

UPDATE ! ! ! I completed my " Dolly For Iris " in time for Christmas 2008 !
I also had two additional requests during the Holidays for two little girls, who fell in love with this wonderful little dolly.
I am now offering her as a Brand New Character
( Special Order ONLY at this time)
in Loving Memory of Iris's sister "Lee" !
It is my hope that these loveable little "misfit" dollies.......
and the reason I created them........ will steal your heart away!!..
