On Sept 7, 1915 the same day that Gruelle applied for his Raggedy Ann patent, he also submitted patent designs for two characters he had illustrated in a book written by Rose Strong Hubbell. The book was titled Quacky Doodles' and Danny Daddles'.
Gruelle's designs for these character dolls were jointed toy ducks. The drake Danny and his female counterpart. The wooden ducks were made by A. Schoenhut Co. and were introduced by the P.F. Volland Co. along with the book in the spring of 1916.
The dolls were produced in a variety of sizes, creating a whole family of Ducks.
Mama Quacky Doodles 10 1/2"   and    Daddy Danny Daddles 12 1/4"
Miss Quacky Doodles 8 1/2"  and    Danny Daddles Junior 10" Baby Quacky 5 3/4"    and    Baby Danny Daddles 6 1/4"
I have not yet completed my version of ALL......of these wonderful characters, but I HAVE just completed my cloth version as 15" Quacky Doodles & Danny Daddles (See pictures below). As my other "reproductions" of the "smaller" versions are finished, they will be added Here!!
Gruelle also cleverly introduced that wonderful clown character Cleety Clown in his illustrations for this book.....as well as a forthcoming book entitled Raggedy Ann Stories by showing a book lying on the floor in one of his illustrations.
