Gruelle first introduced his
Cleety the Clown character in his illustrations for the "Quacky
Doodles'and Danny Daddles'"" book, written by Rose Strong Hubbell in 1916 and illustrated by Gruelle .
Cleety also appeared in many of Gruelle's later books,
including
"Beloved Belindy" and "Marcella".
He is a whimsical character doll, who shared many
exciting adventures with Raggedy Ann
and all the other nursery dolls... who would laugh and
talk and have all kinds of magical fun
when all the real-for-sure people
were away from home or fast aleep!
One morning when Dinah the cook went to make
biscuits............ she had to laugh to herself!
There in her sifter of flour was Cleety's clown hat....
(she secretly suspected that those dolls were carrying on when the "real-for-sure" people were asleep or not at home)
Of course she didn't know that he had fallen head-first
right into the flour bin
and that Belindy had to bath him in the sink, to get all
that flour out of his thick black yarn hair!
Johnny Gruelle never commissioned a Cleety Clown Doll So I created an "Original Design" of my own... And here he is !!!
Here are a few of MY "Original Design" Creations of "Cleety Clown" To Learn more about ALL of the Raggedy Characters..............Click on their Link in the left-hand column.
