Gruelle first introduced his Nice Fat Policeman character in his book,
" Raggedy Ann and Andy and the Nice Fat Policeman".
He is a jovial, plump little character doll, with a heart soft as butter..... the thought of having to arrest Mr. Hooligooly made his knees knock together and his teeth chatter as tears came into his kindly eyes. He was adored by Raggedy Ann and Andy and shared some colorful magic escapades with them while all the real-for-sure people were away from
home or fast aleep! Although Gruelle never commissioned a doll for this character....... I felt he deserved preservation! He makes a nice contrast to the Percy Policeman doll dressed in a more traditional uniform, whereas, Percy has the "bobby" or "keystone" attire!
He is a definite family favorite and is fast becoming one of my more sought after Raggedy Character Dolls!
Here's "My original" Nice Fat Policeman Doll.....
He comes complete with a blue policeman uniform jacket with gold-tone buttons, (the jacket gaps in front and back to accomodate his fat little tummy); his trousers are white with a red stripe on each side; and his white police cap has a soft clear plastic bill and is trimmed with a gold star and braid; he has the traditional red/white striped legs with side-facing feet; and his hi-top boots are black velour. He is made of muslin with stuffed little ears and nose, and fat little cheeks; with big laughing eyes! He is a joy to behold and has become a family favorite! His facial features are hand-embroidered. Each of my dolls, take on a personality of their own as I add the finishing touches...... therefore, each will add that one-of-a-kind distinction to your collection!
Here are a few of MY 'Original' creations of "Nice Fat Policeman" with friends
