Gruelle first introduced his Maizie MooCow character in his 1937 book, " Raggedy Ann and Maizie MooCow"
The book was a "give-a-way" for Abbott's Dairies and was just a staple-bound version not the quality of all of his other books. It is significant though, in that it was one of the last two books Johnny Gruelle lived to see published. The other was Raggedy Ann's Joyful Songs Both books are now, understandably, quite scarce.
In the story, the dolls visit Maizie Moo Cow and bring along their friend, Betty, who just happens to play the piano. Everyone enjoys a feast of hot dogs, cookies, loolipops, and of course,Lots of Ice Cream!!. More visitors stopped by to join in the merriment! There was Catherine Calf, Bertha Bovine, Henrietta Holstein, Jenevieve Jersey, and Madeline Muley.
Maizie Moo Cow sang this joyful song to entertain her guests:
"The Moo cows are a worthy herd Who do a lot of good. They grind up tons of hay and grass, and turn it into food.
That food, you know, is butterfat, Within the milk they give Keeps children all from growing thin, No matter where they live.
So drink the MooCow's creamy milk, For strength and robust health. You need a sturdy body if You hope for worldly wealth!"
