Gruelle first introduced his Percy Policeman character in his book, "
My Very Own Fairy Stories" in 1917.
Visit my page for
Uncle Clem the Scotch Doll to read a little-known
secret.....find out what he and Percy have in common.
In May 1931 the Volland Company introduced ten
Gruelle-inspired character dolls as part of a fourteen-item line,
collectively referred to as the "Raggedy Dolls."
Included were Raggedy Ann and Andy and Beloved Belindy;
a newly designed Sunny Bunny, Eddie Elephant,
and Little Brown Bear;
and a first-time ever Percy(the)Policeman, Uncle Clem,
Eddie Elf, and Pirate Chieftan.
The characters appeared in Gruelle's My Very Own Fairy Stories,
Wooden Willie, Raggedy Ann in the Deep Deep Woods,
Raggedy Ann and Andy and The Camel with the
Wrinkled Knees, and Marcella.
Rounding out the line were four non-Gruelle dolls.
Although Gruelle commissioned a doll for this character.......
Volland ca. 1931 Shown here with other Volland Character dolls,Pirate Chieftan, Uncle Clem, Eddie Elf and Raggedy Ann I had never personally seen one,
when I created my own version from Gruelle's illustrations.
However, when I attended the Raggedy Festival in Arcola, Illinois in
2004 I saw one. I felt he deserved preservation! He makes a nice
contrast to the Nice Fat Policeman doll, which I also created from
Gruelle's illustrations. Dressed in his "bobby" or "keystone cop"
attire! He is a very popular and well
known Gruelle character and is another of the more sought after
character dolls that I have created!
He shares many exciting adventures with Ann and Andy and all the other dolls in the nursery;
while all the real-for-sure people were away from
home or fast aleep!
Here's "My original" Percy The Policeman Doll......
Replaced by...
My current version
He comes dressed in a blue "keystone cop" uniform with gold-tone buttons,
with yellow trimmed cuffs; blue trousers with yellow side stripes; his "bobby" hat is trimmed with gold star,and has blue/yellow chin strap and yellow band; his black velour hi-top boots and black leather belt complete the "keystone cop" attire! He has the traditional "Raggedy" red/white striped legs with front-facing feet; He is made of muslin with stuffed little ears and nose, with auburn yarn hair, eyebrows and mustache; and "bright blue" button eyes! He is a joy to behold and is sure to be a favorite in your Raggedy collection! His hair is hand-stitched and his facial features are all hand-embroidered. Each of my dolls, take on a personality of their own as I add the finishing touches...... therefore, each will add that
one-of-a-kind distinction to your collection!
