Johnny Mouse was first introduced as a character by Johnny Gruelle in a monthly series called "Johnny Mouse and the Woozgoozle" that he wrote and contributed to Woman's World in 1920-1921.
Johnny Mouse and the Wishing Stick(1922) was only his second book published by Bobbs-Merrill. He used mainly the stories and illustrations from his monthly series as his basis for the book.
Gruelle patented a Johnny Mouse doll on July 12, 1921:
meant to be a "tie-in" to the monthly series, and although the Woman's World magazine no longer carried the series they offered the doll for $1.00 through mail order from their " Fun Department."
This doll was 10". The head and hands were made of soft grey felt, with just one ear and a yellow felt hat concealing the missing ear. The rest of the body was made of muslin, which was covered with a non-removeable outfit. The doll's facial features consisted only of shoe button eyes, and a pink painted-on nose. His clothing included a felt collar with a yellow felt ribbon at the neck, a cotton percale print shirt, and red felt britches. He wore a gold felt "bum" patch, on which his "reddish" string tail was attached. His "shoes" were black felt "gaiters with grey soles.
This was a very simply made doll, and I found the storybook version more colorful I have decided to create my Johnny Mouse doll in that image rather than the earlier doll, as I did with my Uncle Clem and Percy Policeman dolls. If someone prefers more of a "replica" or "reproduction" of the original doll, I would consider recreating it on a "Special Order" basis.
I have just completed the process of designing my own Johnny Mouse doll and I think he looks as though he has jumped right out off the pages of Johnny Gruelle's "Johnny Mouse and the Wishing Stick" fairytale storybook.
Here he is with MY Version of Sunny Bunny & Little Brown Bear
He stands approximatedly 18 1/2" high, has his very own "wishing stick" and he has "removeable" clothing and is more brightly colored, like the beautiful illustrations...... so he will fit right in with and also "compliment" all my other Raggedy Character Dolls. His hat is a "lively" bright stripe that fits over one ear and makes you laugh just to look at him. His little black "shoe-button" style eyes literally sparkle with mischief and good nature.
His very presence in your Raggedy Collection is a guarantee of happy days ahead!
He is a delightfully colorful character doll, who has shared many wonderful escapades with the
Woozgoozle and Billy Bear.
He is AVAILABLE NOW, ....BE ONE OF THE FIRST TO ADD HIM TO YOUR COLLECTION!!!
