The one-sheet poster (above) is from the release of the full length cartoon movie produced in 1977 by 20th Century Fox; entitled Raggedy Ann And Andy-A Musical Adventure.
This movie is simply WONDERFUL! You'll notice that the animated versions of the dolls are much more stylized (fatter pear shaped bodies...bigger feet...more cartoonish faces)than the actual dolls. I might do two sets of dolls... one that resembles the actual doll props and another set that looks like the animated version. They're simply ADORABLE!!!
Knickerbocker produced dolls (including the Camel with the Wrinkled Knees) in the style of that movie, but they didn't do all the characters as a set as I hope to do! The movie is absolutely MAGICAL!!!!! All of the toys and dolls in Marcella's playroom come to life... though they look a bit different in comparison to each other. I hope to "Bring to Life" some of the actual animated dolls too! It's easy to see in the movie that Ann's red polka dots are seperate pieces of material that are glued (or sewn) onto her dress. Andy's shirt has the blue and red stripes... I plan to create my own fabric for Ann's dress and Andy's shirt as well. Andy has orange yarn hair while Ann has the reddish-burgundy... and both of them have white arms and hands in contrast to their flesh colored bodies (which is carried over from Gruelle's original books!). Oh, and I DO encourage each and everyone of you to get a copy of this movie for yourself!! Any lover of the Raggedies will get a kick out of it. It's so beautifully done...and the music is wonderful. Joe Raposo (who wrote MANY of the famous Sesame Street songs) composed the music! What can I say, though...I'm a bit partial since I Love Everything Raggedy!!!
The fun-filled exploits of Raggedy Ann, that Beloved fictional doll whose heart declares "I Love You" - have been transformed into an enchanting animated musical, directed by Oscar-Winning animator Richard Williams, with sixteen songs by Joe Raposo of "Sesame Street" fame.
The story begins in the playroom of a little girl named Marcella, a place where wonderful things happen - but only after she is asleep. That's when Raggedy Ann and her pal Andy come to life , leading the other toys on incredible adventures!
When a winsome new French doll called Babette is kidnapped by the notorious pirate, " Captain Contagious" (who lives in a snowglobe with his parrot and has a chronic cold) Raggedy Ann and Andy venture off to find her in the Deep, Deep Woods of fantasy. Can they free Babette and make their way back to the nursery before daybreak??? Perhaps - but first a string of delightful surprises await them.
A fellow Raggedy Lover, who introduced me to this movie, remembers speaking to Kim Gruelle about the original dolls used in the film...and most of them have been lost or destroyed through the years. The director, Richard Williams, had his mother make Ann and Andy for the film, and I'm pretty sure he said that Kim told him that Richard Williams still owns the dolls. The Camel, Babette, Maxi Fix-It, Susie Pincushion, Grandpa, Barney Beanbag, Socko The Worm, Topsy the Clown (female counter-part for Cleety??) and the Twin Penny dolls (who look very similar to Hitty) were all in the movie, too ...but he thought they were made by the studios art department. I would LOVE to create replicas of all of those dolls, some look a little more difficult than others... some look to be made of wood and/or ceramic and composition. I plan to work with gesso and/or felt molded faces for some of the dolls. This is a HUGE project I am beginning work on, and plan to keep you "updated" on any progress I am making on this page. As early as 1941, Raggedy Ann and Andy have appeared in animated features. There was even an animated television series that ran from 1988 to 1992 called The Adventures of Raggedy Ann and Andy.
