She began as a family rag doll; an old toy, faded and worn, tossed into an attic. And there, the legend goes, a little girl named Marcella found her one wet and rainy day..........

Gruelle claimed that two of his favorite poems by
James Whitcomb Riley
("The Raggedy Man" and "Little Orphant
Annie")
had inspired the name for his 1915 patent design for Raggedy
Ann.
The earliest Raggedy Ann dolls
"documented" were offered by the P.F. Volland
Co. (None of Gruelle's original patented dolls were
documented)
The introduction of the "Cottage" Raggedy
Ann ( modeled after Gruelle's book illustrations)
was timed to coinside with the fall 1918 publication of Raggedy
Ann Stories.
They were intended to be sold as related merchandise
along with Gruelle's new book.
